Ploughing matches

Request for information

We have received the following request for information, can anyone out there help please?

I am looking for information on the Inverness-Shire Farmers Society Ploughing Competitions in the 1930's. I have the cup which my Grandfather retained after winning the competition for the 3rd time in 1937/38.

I believe the competition was held in the fields beside the hedge row but would like to know more about the origin and how long it ran for.   b.v.t@btinternet.com

Ploughing Matches, reply from Mr P Kelsey, Balloch

In the Inverness Advertiser of 18th March 1853, page 6, column a, there is a report on the Inverness Farmers’ Society’s Second Ploughing match, at Balloch on 16th (?) March 1853.  There were 28 ploughs (less than the previous year).

The “best grooming” prize was won by the team from Mr Hugh Fraser of Balloch Farm.

There is a list of  prize winners and gentlemen witnessing the competition.  Some of the gentlemen visited the Culloden Brick & Tile Manufactory during the day.

I have a slightly blurred, but readable electronic copy of the report if anyone would like to see it.

Note, thank you for that, if any other readers have information please email it in, thank you.

GD NOTE

The Black Isle Farmers’ Society kindly asked its members for information but no-one had a recollection or information about the event.
