Clì Gàidhlig Courses

We run Gaelic courses at different levels throughout Scotland, mostly at the weekend. We also offer longer courses of up to five days, according to demand. The classes are fun, with the emphasis on conversation. Learners will benefit from experienced teachers and the opportunity to meet other Gaelic speakers in their area.

We teach classes at these levels:

  • First Step (beginners)
  • Stepping Out (lower intermediate)
  • Walking On (higher intermediate)
  • Running at Speed (advanced)

When booking a course, aim for the level where you feel comfortable but a little stretched. Classes are flexible, and you have the opportunity to switch to another level if you wish.

Prospective Clì courses:

These are our current prospective courses.

Our courses’ manager, Seonag Anderson, is happy to arrange courses in any part of Scotland (or England) if there is sufficient demand. If you know of enough Gaelic learners in your area who would attend a course, e-mail Seonag at seonag@cli.org.uk,or phone 01463 226710.

Grammar course

For native speakers and advanced learners, we offer a 3-5 day intensive grammar course. This course is taught by award-winning journalist and broadcaster Roddy Maclean, who teaches grammar to broadcasters and writes the weekly Letter for Learners. With this course, native speakers and fluent learners can improve their grasp of Gaelic grammar and develop skills necessary for working in the world of Gaelic.

Gaelic Awareness

With the Gaelic Language Act giving new responsibilities to public bodies to promote the language, there is a growing need for staff to appreciate the benefits of using Gaelic. Clì provides a one-day “Gaelic Awareness” course, in English, for groups and individuals who want to raise their consciousness of the language and its regeneration. The course will show you why Gaelic is so important to Scotland and how to:

  • pronounce the Gaelic greeting “Ciamar a tha thu?”
  • read and understand Gaelic place-names
  • tell a tourist where Gaelic came from

Please contact the Cli office for the Gaelic Awareness Day.

Gaelic Conversation Groups

Conversation groups are a valuable way for learners to practise their Gaelic informally. For advice on setting up a conversation group, contact D J MacIntyre, director, Clì Gàidhlig: dj@cli.org.uk or phone 01463 226710

A conversation group for native speakers and learners is held on Saturdays from 10.00 to 12.00 in Culloden Public Library, Keppoch Road, Culloden.
